Fresno State awarded a $2.9M grant over 5 years to help future well being professionals

The California Division of Well being Care Entry and Data introduced $40.8 million in grant awards to twenty organizations that help and encourage college students from underrepresented areas and backgrounds to pursue healthcare careers, together with Fresno State. 

Fresno State will obtain a $2.9 million award over 5 years, to be issued by way of the Well being Professions Pathways Program. Different California State Universities awarded embrace California State College, Dominguez Hills ($3.3 million), San Diego State College ($2.5 million), and California State Polytechnic College, Humboldt’s Sponsored Applications Basis ($498,000).

Fresno State’s Well being Professions Pathways Program will likely be housed with the campus Well being Careers Alternative Program and can help underrepresented and/or deprived high-school and college-level college students from the San Joaquin Valley who aspire to offer again to their communities as main care physicians, dentists, pharmacists, doctor assistants, optometrists, chiropractors, scientific lab scientists, scientific psychologist/behavioral well being practitioners, podiatrists and public well being specialists.

“These residents are among the most medically underserved in the state and …some of the poorest and most economically disadvantaged in the entire nation,” DeLaCerda mentioned. “Our program will emphasize engaging, recruiting, and supporting underrepresented and disadvantaged students interested in pursuing health care careers.”


Present recruitment and educational packages will likely be enhanced with peer mentoring, check prep, internships, educational advising and well being conferences. New internships and extra packages will likely be established at excessive faculties and group faculties, together with actions to empower Fresno State college students to change into aggressive well being skilled college candidates.
