NAMIWalks Your Way Michigan is coming to Wayne State’s campus on Saturday, Sept. 24. The 5K stroll to boost psychological well being consciousness begins at 10 a.m.

Participation is free however walkers are requested to register, and might achieve this both online previous to the occasion or in individual beginning at 8 a.m. Saturday.

Whereas Wayne State has been closely concerned within the occasion in previous years, this would be the first yr the stroll takes place on campus.

“Wayne State has been a tremendous supporter of NAMI,” mentioned Kevin Fischer, government director of NAMI Michigan. “Wayne State actually has a group referred to as the NAMI Warriors on campus that has been supportive of NAMI walks for probably the last seven years.”

Wayne State’s College of Social Work was instrumental in bringing the stroll to campus. Fischer labored with College of Social Work Dean Sheryl Kubiak and Wayne State Dean of Scholar David Strauss to maneuver the stroll to Wayne State.

“It’s a fundraising event, but to me it’s more about raising awareness for mental health,” Fischer mentioned. “We have seen so many younger folks affected by the psychological well being disaster, particularly over the past two and a half years via the pandemic. We expect it is an incredible alternative to host the occasion on the college’s campus and entice faculty and highschool college students to take part.

“We want to share the message that it’s okay to not to be okay. And we need to eliminate the stigma associated with behavioral health care diagnoses so people who need help will seek that help and know that it’s okay.”

Strauss hopes that internet hosting the stroll on campus will encourage a lot of Wayne State college students to take part.

“Mental health is such an important issue, and the more we can raise awareness and help others, the better. Thus, our enthusiasm to host the walk at Wayne State,” Strauss mentioned.
